Scholarship Application

Scholarships
Each year, a number of scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a degree in Packaging. The following section describes scholarships that are available in most years.

School of Packaging Incoming Student Scholarship
Incoming Freshmen and transfer students who plan to matriculate in a Fall semester at Michigan State University and major in Packaging are eligible for this scholarship. Applications are sent to prospective students after they are admitted to MSU. The deadline for applying is in April. The scholarship is awarded for the following year.

Paul L. and Joanne L. Peoples Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to a student returning to higher education for a Bachelor's degree. To be eligible, students must be admitted to a Packaging degree program and in be in good academic standing at the time the award is activated. The beginning or continuing of education after a delay of any kind may constitute eligibility for this scholarship.

School of Packaging General Scholarship Application (PDF Format)
Current Packaging students can submit the general application form. It confers eligibility for a number of scholarships that are funded by packaging companies and organizations. The form must be completed each Fall or Spring semester for the student to be eligible for scholarships that are awarded during that academic year.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities
Occasionally, during the academic year, other scholarship opportunities are made available to students majoring in Packaging at Michigan State University. These opportunities may require a different application or some information to supplement the general scholarship application. Announcements of these scholarship opportunities are sent to all students by e-mail and the information is posted on the scholarship bulletin board, located near Room 115 Packaging Building. Additional information and applications can also be obtained by contacting Dr. Harold Hughes, Scholarship Coordinator at 517-353-6462.

In the current year, scholarships awarded under this arrangement have been funded by:

  • West Michigan Institute of Packaging Professionals (four awards)
  • Petroleum Packaging Council (two to four awards)
  • Corrugated Containers--Division of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry
  • Material Handling Educational Foundation

Obligations of a Recipient
Students who are selected to receive a scholarship are notified by mail. They receive a Scholarship Acceptance Form which must be completed, signed and returned. The form asks the student to certify current enrollment in Packaging and states that the award will be withdrawn if the student changes his/her major. The student is also given information about the organization which funded the award and is directed to send a "Thank You" letter to a specified contact person with a copy to the Packaging Scholarship Coordinator. After the form and the copy of the letter are received, the funds are released to the student's account at MSU to be applied to tuition and fees. Scholarships funds are not usually awarded directly to the student, but there are certain organizations which do provide the funds in that way.
