The School of Packaging offers a number of online educational opportunities, for those who are just starting a career in packaging, or for those seeking an advanced degree.
For this coming
Spring Semester which begins January 9, 2006, the School of Packaging
will be offering the following online courses:
1) PKG 101 - Principles of Packaging (3 credits) - Packaging systems, materials and forms, and their relationship to the needs and wants of society. This is a stand alone course for anyone interested in understanding the basics of packaging. You can preview the course here: http://vu.msu.edu/preview/pkg101/index.html
2) PKG 491 - Special Topics: Hazardous Materials Packaging (3 credits) - Review of current regulations, US, international, governmental and trade associations. Using regulations to determine protective packaging options. Laboratory testing and principles for design.
3) PKG 802 - Packaging Machinery, Distribution and Dynamics (4 credits) - Packaging machinery and line operations, statistical process control. Transportation environment. Distribution packaging design and testing. This is a collateral course designed for those students that do not have a packaging background or undergraduate degree, but wish to pursue a masters degree and meet the appropriate entrance requirements. It can also be taken as a stand alone course for those interested in taking it as a lifelong education student.
4) PKG 805
- Advanced Packaging Dynamics (3 credits) - Shock & Vibration. Distribution hazards and product fragility. Cushion performance and package design. Environmental measurement and simulation.

PKG 815 - Permeability and Shelf Life (3 credits) - Relationship between the storage life and packaged food and pharmaceutical products and the gas, moisture and organic vapor permeability of packages in various environments.
6) PKG 828 - Processing and Applications of Packaging Plastics (3 credits) - Processing of packaging plastics: extrusion, coating, film, containers. Effects of processing variables on morphology and performance.
