To earn a B.S. degree in Packaging,
the courses taken by an undergraduate student must satisfy the requirements
of Michigan State University, the College of Agriculture and Natural
Resources, and the School of Packaging. A student also selects elective
courses to gain additional knowledge or expertise in a particular area
or to explore a non-packaging subject. The specific requirements of
the curriculum are described in the following sections.
University Requirements
Michigan State University requires 120 credits for graduation at the
B.S. level. Of those credits, 28 must be in the areas of writing and
integrative studies.
College of Agriculture
and Natural Resources Requirements
The School of Packaging is an administrative unit of the College of
Agriculture and Natural Resources. All students enrolled in majors within
this college are required to complete specific courses in mathematics,
economics and the physical and biological sciences. The economics course
can be in microeconomics or macroeconomics. Microeconomics is preferred
for Packaging majors. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
also requires each to earn 26 credits in courses offered within this
college. Packaging majors will automatically complete this requirement
with specific courses required in the Packaging curriculum.
School of Packaging
Requirements
The School of Packaging requires each student to complete a set of "core"
courses and additional elective courses that can be selected by the
student.
Packaging Core Courses
To obtain a Bachelor of Science degree, each student must complete a
core curriculum consisting of 8 Packaging courses. The core accounts
for 28 of the 120 credits required for the degree and includes more
than 100 hours of practical laboratory experience. Core courses include
studies in technical principles and dynamics for packaging, materials
(glass, plastic, paper, and metals), packaging processes, and package
development (a team experience).
Packaging Electives
Six credits of Packaging electives are required. They can be earned
through course work or participation in the Internship or Study Abroad
programs. Most Packaging students take three or more Packaging elective
courses to enhance their backgrounds. Packaging elective study is available
in printing, environmental issues, material handling and automotive
packaging, medical packaging, food packaging, distribution and performance
testing, packaging laws and regulations, and packaging economics.
The Business Cognate
Packaging students must complete a minimum of 12 credits in a business
cognate. Accounting is required. Additional complementary courses can
be chosen from advertising, business law, business management, financial
management, marketing and supply chain management.
Additional Required
Courses
Course work required by the School of Packaging includes general chemistry,
organic chemistry, physics, microbiology, college algebra/trigonometry,
calculus, and statistics. A number of these courses are prerequisites
for packaging core courses.
